Jazz Composition 1 (Week 1)

06/07/2021 06:00 PM - 06/12/2021 12:00 PM MT

CCJA Summer Institute Week 1: 6/7-6/12

Jazz Composition Class • Monday 6/7-Friday 6/11 6:00-7:30pm • Recording Session to Culminate the Class on Saturday 6/12 10:00am-12:00pm

Open to ages 13-adult

By the end of the week, students in the Jazz Composition Class will have the opportunity to hear a brand new piece of music - written by them! - recorded by a band of professional jazz musicians (with the composer themself playing as well!). This is a special and rare opportunity! Led by a professional jazz musician on CCJA's Faculty (TBD), students will explore elements of jazz composition including: compositional process, chord progressions and their conception, creating melodies and grooves, some basic counterpoint, the role of rhythm in composition, and more!

A background in jazz theory, chord progressions, and forms is helpful for this course. If have any questions at all about that, feel free to reach out to  CCJA Staff Member Annie Booth at annie@jazzarts.org for further clarification.
